Exploring the Layers of the Avocado ECO Mattress

We got our hands on an Avocado ECO Mattress after a customer dropped it off saying it felt like they were basically sleeping right on the springs. Not really firm in a nice way, not supportive in a cozy way, more like the cushioning just vanished. So we did what we usually do, grabbed our tools, unzipped it, and ripped the whole thing apart just to see what is actually inside

From the outside it actually looks clean and pretty simple. The cover is made of organic cotton mixed with wool and it has that light earthy smell like it is trying very hard to be natural and probably costs more than it looks. It feels soft when you touch it but it is not really thick or padded. More like a thin top layer than anything that actually absorbs pressure. Already gives you a hint of what is coming

Under that is the comfort layer, a 2 inch block of Dunlop latex around D65 density. This is where it starts feeling very firm and very direct. You press into it and it pushes right back almost immediately. It does not really sink or hug you. It just rebounds fast like a rubber block. We kept pressing it thinking okay there has to be something softer here somewhere but there really is not much

Then you get to the core which is all pocketed coils. Individually wrapped springs, tight spacing, and reinforced edges they call quantum edge which sounds high tech but it is really just stronger sides so you do not feel like you are sliding off. We did some coil testing and weight loading and everything felt pretty consistent. Strong support and stable but definitely not soft or plush in any way

Instead of using glue everything is held together with hog rings. It is very mechanical and kind of interesting to look at. Everything is clipped and locked in place which is good for durability but it also makes the mattress feel more responsive. Almost a bit too lively depending on what you are used to

After seeing it all inside the customer complaint actually makes total sense. This mattress is not trying to be soft or cloud like at all. It is more like here is structure here is support and that is it. If you like firm beds you will probably get along with it. If you do not you might end up feeling every spring a little too personally at night
